About Us:

We understand ABOLITION to include both the DISMANTLEMENT OF OPPRESSIVE AND RACIST SYSTEMS of policing, incarceration, captivity & surveillance and the COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY-LED SYSTEMS OF CARE, strategies to reduce harm & life-nurturing futures.

Freedom & Captivity is a community-based, non-hierarchical collective with a core team and a broad network of coalition partners and participants, led by the concerns and interests of people most impacted by the criminal legal system and incarceration. We advocate for decarceration and abolition, and we promote restorative community-based responses to harm rather than incarceration.

Our work includes story-telling, creative expression, research, policy analysis, advocacy, and community building. We aim to change narratives about the need for incarceration, how best to respond to harm, and how to offer support and repair to those who have been harmed.

Growing from the success of our 2021 season of learning and visioning, Freedom & Captivity is now the container for several new projects showcased here. Our core team members have created the F&C Curriculum Project, the F&C Archive, new research on carcerality and restorative pathways to decarceration, podcasts, and more.
